OSHA standard: 29 CFR 1926 Subpart E (1926.95–.106)

At a glance

  • PPE is the last line of defense, not the first
  • Wear it right or it isn't protecting you
  • Inspect daily; damaged PPE gets replaced, not tolerated
  • The task changes? The PPE changes with it

Introduction

PPE is what stands between you and the hazard after every other control has done its part — it's the last line of defense, not a substitute for guards, ventilation, or safe work practices. It only works when it's the right equipment, worn correctly, and in good condition. Today's talk covers the basics we expect on every job, and the habits that make PPE actually protect you.

Head, Eyes & Face

  • Hard hat wherever overhead work, equipment, or falling-object potential exists — which on our sites means basically everywhere
  • Replace a hard hat that has taken a hit or shows cracks, and check the suspension, not just the shell
  • Safety glasses as the site minimum; face shield OVER glasses for grinding, cutting, and chipping
  • Sunglasses are not safety glasses unless they're rated Z87

Hands & Feet

  • Match the glove to the task: cut-resistant for blades and sheet metal, chemical-resistant for concrete and solvents, no gloves near rotating equipment
  • Barrier cream and glove changes matter with wet concrete — cement burns show up hours later
  • Safety-toe boots in good condition, laced and tied — sole separation and exposed steel mean replacement
  • No athletic shoes, no sandals, ever, including quick visits

Wear It Right

  • Chin straps, snug suspensions, glasses that actually sit on your face — loose PPE is decoration
  • Hearing protection in designated areas and around loud tools; if you have to raise your voice at arm's length, it's loud enough to need it
  • High-visibility vest any time you're on foot around equipment or traffic
  • Inspect PPE at the start of shift; replace, don't repair

Key takeaways

  • PPE is the last line — controls come first
  • Hard hat, Z87 eyes, safety toes: the site baseline
  • Right glove for the task; none near rotating parts
  • Face shield goes over glasses, not instead of them
  • Loose or damaged PPE protects nobody
  • New task, new hazard check, new PPE

Questions for your crew

  1. PPE is the last line of defense — guards, ventilation, and safe work practices come first.
  2. The site baseline: hard hat, Z87-rated safety glasses, and safety-toe boots — sunglasses are not safety glasses unless rated.
  3. Match the glove to the task, and wear no gloves near rotating equipment.
  4. Face shields go over safety glasses for grinding, cutting, and chipping — not instead of them.
  5. Wear hearing protection around loud work and hi-vis any time you're on foot near equipment or traffic.
  6. Inspect PPE at the start of shift and replace damaged gear — loose or broken PPE protects nobody.
